Thembang Heritage Village: Arunachal Pradesh’s Living Fortress of the Eastern Himalayas

What makes Thembang truly unique is that it is not an abandoned archaeological site—it is a living heritage village. Generations of the Monpa tribe continue to reside within its ancient stone fortifications, preserving customs, architecture, and community traditions that have been passed down for centuries. The village was originally designed as a fortified settlement to protect its inhabitants from invasions and tribal conflicts. Massive stone walls surround the settlement, while two traditional gateways once served as the primary entrance and an emergency escape route. Even today, walking through these narrow stone lanes feels like stepping into a forgotten Himalayan kingdom.

One of Thembang's greatest attractions is its beautifully preserved vernacular architecture. Houses are built using locally sourced stone and timber without modern cement, demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship of the Monpa community. Prayer walls (Mani walls), intricately carved wooden balconies, ancient stone pathways, and traditional Buddhist motifs can be found throughout the village. Every structure reflects centuries of indigenous knowledge, designed to withstand the harsh Himalayan climate while blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

The surrounding forests are rich in biodiversity and support wildlife such as the Red Panda, Himalayan birds, orchids, and numerous medicinal plant species. The Monpa people have long practised sustainable living, maintaining a close relationship with the natural environment through traditional ecological knowledge.
